Shelley Anthos was born in Pasadena, CA and lives in Hermosa Beach. She has studied at the Interlochen Art Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Anthos‘ new series explores boats as symbols of power and fantasy.
Her Greek heritage draws her to the ancient Trireme, a warship that ruled the Mediterranean for more than a thousand years. Triremes were adorned with apotropaic eyes, designed to repel evil. In Hell is Empty; the Devils are Here, a white dragon hangs above a ship, but cannot approach it.
In Barque II, a large vessel with multiple masts and mainmasts, the ship has the power to hurt—but avoids temptation, shrouded in a sea of reds.
A Chinese merchant ship (a junk, in A Lavender Sky) lights up the horizon in cadmium red, announcing the passage of both the precious cargo within—and the majesty of the imperial power that could spawn such a ship.

Ancient or modern, the ships in this series travel across waters, casting shadows from their large, triangular forms. The images they create on their path is captured in this work.
'Hark, do you hear the sea?' -Shakespeare, King Lear
Anthos’ other work is varied, but includes the same theme of women, human and animal empowerment. She captures the spirit of people, and animals in combinations of abstraction and realism. Her work hangs in the permanent collection of the Calder Museum in Putney, Vermont, and a sea life mural adorns downtown Putney. Shelley is a member of the South Bay Artist Collective (SBAC).
